A free Kindle d/l from 2014. It was the story of unconventional Maud, who I really think had some mental issues, trying to survive in a small town in Vermont. Her diet was mostly potato chips and beer. She was an artist and the book tells of other people she reacts with in town. If this would have not have been a short read, I probably would not have finished it. 200 pages

I loves this book. It is about facing your fears and weaknesses and carrying on regardless. it is about taking a stand for what you truly believe in no matter the opposition.

If you want to know what this book is like, think of Garrison Keillor's stories set in Minnesota. If you can't get enough of Mr. Keillor's lore then turn to Sherry Roberts' Maud's House.

Like Lake Woebegon, Round Corners, Vermont has a lot of winter weather and very quirky, unforgettable characters. Maude is no exception. She grew up in an old Vermont farm house that had additions added as the family grew. The house had already seen two generations born in it. When Maud was four, her father gave her the house and she started painting it, every bit of it, inside and out. She painted doors where there weren't in and always painted with very wild colors. People stopped by to watch the house, it became a tourist spot. Her father fixed up a guest book for people to sign. Hippies were particularly attracted to the colors of the house.

But her husband George, thought of it as real estate instead of a world of art, or a pouring out of the soul. He was about as opposite as you can get from Maude. He liked cornflakes, she like children’s cereal and on and on. He was an accountant she was an artist. The story of how they met and what their married life was like is in the book. At the beginning, he had already passed away and she would go to the cemetery and kick his tombstone. That tells you a little about their married life.

There are plenty of great characters in Square Corners, Vermont. The Reverend who plays taps (a little off key) on his saxophone, Wynne , the only beautician in town who kept count of how many days until her child would be born posted in her shop, Thomas who is great at giving foot rubs and a whole slew of other people who have their problems and their joys.

But most of all, there is T-Bone, a great friend, wonderful cook, treated his cows to music and so understanding. T-Bone is such a wonderful guy that I think you should read this book to find out about him. I don’t want to spoil it for you.

I really enjoyed this tale. I think that anyone who loves quirky characters and humor will love it too.
