Why She Died by J.G. Roberts
Detective Rachel Hart #3

Murders happen
Killers kill
Why do they kill
And
How do they choose their prey?

Policemen follow clues
Look for reasons
Killers kill
Hoping to stop
Another murder

Coming into a series after t he main character and her team have had two books to settle into their roles is not always easy. I did have enough tidbits of information to realize that Rachel was in charge, had been off duty a bit due to a family situation, had suffered a bad situation with her twin during childhood and that her twin was missing. Rachel seemed a bit fragile but willing to do her job. Her team were there to follow the clues and determine who the murderer was from a whole lot of contenders.

Most of the characters in this book are friends from college, the people they are dating or work with and a few are family. There are also policemen and women and the people they encounter and live with or date. There are some twists, turns and surprises before the book is wrapped up at the end. The police procedural aspects flowed, and it was easy to follow the reasoning of those working the case.

I felt there were many threads to the story as it was not just limited to the murder case but also a couple of side stories that eventually tied into the overall story. I am wondering if I had read the first two books I would feel I knew Rachel and understand her reasoning and actions better in this book. That said, it was able to be read as a standalone and will appeal to those that like British police procedurals.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC – This is my honest review.

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley.

I have not read either of the previous books in this series, which explains why I felt as if I had come into the story in the middle in many ways. It wasn't apparent to me how Rachel, who treated her team unkindly at times and spent the rest of her time worrying about her missing sister and becoming hysterical whenever the body of a woman was reported in case it was her, managed to hold down such a responsible job.

This was slow to get going and, at the beginning and then at one point later on, had sections which played with the linear timeline apparently simply to confuse, since it didn't really add anything to the plot. The ending was frankly incredible (and I don't mean that in a good way). Also, while I'm being picky

SPOILERS

the definition of a serial killer is three or more victims, so a certain character's cunning plan to murder a prostitute in case he later needed to kill Rachel's sister, thus ensuring the police would look for a serial killer, makes even less sense than the author perhaps intended.

Also, could a young woman, even one with martial arts skills, really strangle a rugby-playing young man?

Naomi Bailey reluctantly took a natural sleep remedy for sleep after dealing with weeks of stress and sleeplessness. The very next morning, her five-years-old Cassie turns up missing. She is wracked with guilt. She recently split from her husband Charlie, despite the fact that they had a very strong marriage. This was due to a sensitive and heartbreaking incident that Naomi just cannot get past. Charlie is as devastated by Cassie's disappearance at Naomi and insists on coming home while the police search for her. I felt so much for them, for their plight. I not only hoped for Cassie to be found safe, but also for their marriage to find ground again.

Rachel Hart is the DCI on the case. This case is close to her heart, because when she was a child both she and her sister were abducted. So, quite naturally, Rachel puts her all into this case. Rachel wisely considers several people as suspects with regards to Cassie. It doesn't take Rachel long to see that things with Naomi and Charlie are quite tentative.

What a fast-paced book that kept me on my toes! I could not put this book down. I was surprised at some of the twists this book took. Furthermore, although discovering who took Charlie became easy to see, the motivation behind it wasn't. That made the book that much more engaging.

Little Girl Missing is the first book I have read by J.G. Roberts and is the first book in the DCI Rachel Hart series. Rachel Hart is a no-nonsense detective who leaves no stone unturned. Her past experience is touched on in this book, and we meet her sister. I look forward to continuing with this series.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.
