I was given this as an ebook by a Goodreads contact; I have a big backlog of books I want to read, but this looked interesting and I thought it would be good to help support an indie author, so I decided to read it, not really expecting anything great.

Well, I was surprised and delighted by the book. Near the end, I had trouble putting it down. I think that it would appeal most to people who frequent various social networking sites like Facebook, or at least have a good understanding of the culture.

The book takes place in the near future, and seems pretty believable to me. Much of what happens is already pretty close to possible.

In this story, most people have implants with a direct connection between the internet and their brain, so they can communicate continuously with their friends, receive filtered news on any subject they want, and several other "benefits". Most cars are self-driving, so there's no need to interrupt this connection for commuting. There's very little direct interaction with others, as everything is done via networking, including communicating with those around you. For many people, this is an ideal existence, I suppose, unless someone manages to do the "impossible", and hack your interface.

The protagonists are two women; one is a nurse who works with mental patients, and the other is a programmer along the lines of Lisbeth Salander, the "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" from Swedish author Stieg Larsson. When a large influx of people start having psychotic episodes, the two women are brought together and begin working on the cause. Then the excitement begins.

All in all, it was a fun book to read, and had some things to think about. It was humorous, but conceivable, when one woman was surprised to learn that there was a war happening where thousands were killed, and she knew nothing about it because her news was filtered to only show what she wanted to read, like humorous cat stories, etc. It's a quick read, so check it out.

I was given a free copy for an honest review.

This book is an interesting sci-fi novel. It reminded me of that "Overlogging" episode of South Park. People are dependant on their "Navis", a technology sort of like smartphones, only implanted in the brain, eyes, and ears.

Phoebe is a nurse that works at a hospital when suddenly a lot of people are brought in behaving aggressively. The hospital is soon overwhelmed, and to make matters worse Phoebe is in a car accident with a manual-driven car driven my a woman named Mila.

When Pheoebe's younger brother Jamie is stricken with "HAD" Mila, a programmer for Navi, helps find out what's wrong. The two women soon discover a conspiracy and things get intense.

I really enjoyed this novel. Just so you know, there is same-sex situations, but nothing too explicit. This held my attention and I had to hunch over my Kindle as it was charging because I didn't want to tear my eyes away!

This was a very disappointing instance of when an excellent concept totally failed to deliver.

The pace was far too fast to allow anything to make sense, and while I accept that there are times a writer needs to 'tell' in order to avoid getting too bogged down in unnecessary detail, in the execution of this novel there was an excess of telling so that as a reader you felt like you were on a roller coaster, flying around a breakneck curve with no frame of reference, and nothing to draw you or hold you into the car.

The characters – almost without exception – are unsympathetic, or so poorly drawn as to leave the reader feeling so apathetic about that that things that should have shocked or disgusted went past without any emotional response whatsoever.

I fear the author was using the shock approach far too much in what could have been a very through provoking novel if it had been written in a different, more measured way.

The Lightbringers is a thought provoking read that makes you think seriously about whether or not this could really happen. Definitely an interesting read. It could have been used a little more work to make it a 5 star read. It was still enjoyable. I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in the idea of a dystopian society in our not too distant future. Is it possible? You tell me.

Disclaimer: I received this book as an early review copy.
