Tietoja tekijästä

Ayn Rand, 1905 - 1982 Novelist and philosopher Ayn Rand was born Alice Rosenbaum on February 2, 1905 in St. Petersburg, Russia. She graduated with highest honors in history from the University of Petrograd in 1924, and she came to the United States in 1926 with dreams of becoming a screenwriter. In näytä lisää 1929, she married actor Charles "Frank" O'Connor. After arriving in Hollywood, Rand was spotted by Cecil B. DeMille standing at the gate of his studio and gave her a job as an extra in King of Kings. She also worked as a script reader and a wardrobe girl and, in 1932, she sold Red Pawn to Universal Studios. In the 1950's, she returned to New York City where she hosted a Saturday night group she called "the collective." It was also during this time that Rand received a fan letter from a young man, Nathaniel Branden. She was impressed with his letter, and she wrote him back. Her correspondence with him eventually led to an affair that lasted over a decade. He became her chief spokesperson and codified the principles of her novels into a strict philosophical system (objectivism) and founded an institute bearing his name. Their affair ended in 1968 when Branden got involved with another one of Rand's disciples. According to Rand, people are inherently selfish and act only out of personal interest making a selfish act, a rational one. It is from this belief that her characters play out their lives. Rand's first novel was "We the Living" (1936) and was followed by "Anthem" (1938), "The Fountainhead" (1943), and "Atlas Shrugged" (1957). All four of her novels made the top ten of the controversial list of the 100 Best Novels of the 20th Century. On March 6, 1982, Ayn Rand died in her New York City apartment. The epic clash between individualism and conformity, "The Fountainhead" by Ayn Rand is an excellent portrayal of her philosophy of Objectivism, which emphasizes individualism, rational self-interest, and the pursuit of one's own happiness. In it, Rand explores themes of creativity, integrity, and the struggle between the individual and society, and offers a warning for those tempted to sacrifice one's principles for societal approval. I’ve read it and Atlas Shrugged several times, and whether one loves or loathes "The Fountainhead," it undeniably remains a thought-provoking and influential work that continues to stimulate intellectual discourse.… (lisätietoja)

One can not really write a short review on this book if it ended with 5 stars. But one also can not write everything about this book without writing another book. I have pages and pages of handwritten text that I someday will put to use...

...but for now everything is simple: this book is about ideas as clock is about time. There is no other use for clock except idea of time and everything that comes with it. So is the book. Really that simple. It objectifies everyone and everything. To the point of been mechanical. And it's about mechanics too! About that steel-cage concrete philosophical building that rises to the sky in one single move. Everything is definitive. Steel-cage of story structure, apartments of world scenes, furniture of characters... it's as beautiful as one construction can be. Almost blinding...

...and there is love.

The love... Love. There is no simple words describing love in this book. Except word "love". Very not for everyone love. It is mechanical and objectified of course. Also it is grand and steel strong. It is in the whole building, it is in the matter of the book.

And the characters, they are cogs and springs, they are movers and counters, they are parts that make whole, they unique and exist as one. There is absolutely no character development whatsoever, there is no need in one. There is no place for doubts, there is only certainty. There is just this sound of steel beams smashing together, there is this sound of big industrial hammers smashing ideas into matter. There is this sound of beating heart of the machine.

Imagine you sitting in Bugatti Veyron, imagine you pushing pedal and open throttle to release all that thousand wild horses into this world. There is a very clear line between people who going there with whole heart no mind technicalities, and the people who don't care because it's just a car.

There is no one side to this book. There is good. There is bad.

But personally I don't give a damn. I'm in love.

I'm big fan of dystopian novels. My personal opinion on this one-and you can take it or leave I could care less--is to read it and then decide whether it meant anything to you. It's 106 pages. Pretty short I'd say.

It's simply written, but don't let the simplicity fool you. It's one of those books that makes you think, if you give it the chance to do so, and analyze the current state of our society. Some of the passages mirror what goes on daily in our present day humanity. It's also interesting to see the evolution of the main protagonist.

As a feminist at heart (don't judge me), I can see what the author did with the secondary character. In my opinion, I don't believe that the intention was to cause a Feminist riot, but I can see what the author was intending on portraying with the characters.

Honestly, don't let my review or other reviews cloud your judgment or inclination of wanting to discover this book for yourself. Take a chance. You might be surprised :)
