Former marine Harry and his wife, Sasha, just bought the home of their dreams in the beautiful setting of Teton Valley. It's a rural ranch house with acres of meadow, forest and river across their little parcel of paradise. That is until their new neighbours pop over with the world's creepiest housewarming gift - a guide on how to cope with the ancient spirit that terrorises the valley each season. They dismiss them... until spring arrives and brings with it ominous lights floating over the pond. And worse is yet to come.

I wanted to give this book 4 stars because I loved the premise. The juxtaposition of the beautiful landscape and the creeping horrors of being watched by a spirit older than the hills that wants you off its land was *chef's kiss*. The characters left a little to be desired, it was very hard at times to even like Harry as a character. He's stubborn, abrasive, quick to anger, and kind of insufferable - even given the situation they find themselves in. The other characters were more palatable but given Harry is 50% of the narration, he's not easy to escape.

The rising creep factor was great for the most part. I was so excited at each season change to see how the spirit would manifest and affect the characters. But it felt a bit meh by the end. It was all too neatly wrapped in a bow, heroes saved the day, don't ask any further questions.

There is also the glaring issue of the white saviour undertones of this whole book. The book did seem to call itself out on it at one point, with Joe (who is Native American) calling out Harry's expectation that he could "fix" this. But then went straight back into 'white guy and wife manage to do what no one else could do for hundreds of years based on the power of love and forgiveness'. It kind of ruined the whole vibe for me by the end. It's not where I thought the story was going to go.

Overall, great premise, not so great execution.

Some scary moments for sure in Old Country, but it didn't generate that feeling of creeping dread that I expect when I read horror. This was more cinematic than psychological, so it may be perfect for a different reader. In the alternating chapters from husband Harry's and wife Sasha's perspectives, we don't really get much character development, but plenty of chilling, movie-ready scenes, as they gradually come to understand that the remote ranch property they purchased has some really strange seasonal shit they're going to have to deal with if they want to survive.… (lisätietoja)
