In this closely argued monograph of military sociology, Pratten examines the process of how the Australian ground forces transformed themselves from an organization living on the dwindling human capital of the ANZAC tradition, and more concerned with internal security than anything else, into a field force as modern as any in World War II. The main point for Pratten is that the Australian tradition of meritocracy only becomes apparent later in the period being covered, as at the start the cadre of men who commanded the infantry battalions of the Australian Imperial Force were very much a social elite and it took time (and much weeding) to create the current professional tradition. Another key point is that while the Australian Militia and parallel Professional Force provided just enough of a cadre to build the Second Australian Imperial Force, many of the problems of the Australian 8th Division (in particular) were simply due to that the cupboard was by that point bare.
