A thoroughly documented and impressively researched chronicle though the narrative can be a bit dry at times.
Interesting - But - two things held me back from a better rating: 1.) No footnotes as to where data came from. His death rate for Cahaba Prison is vastly different (higher) from any other sources I have read. Aside from his Bibliography, there are no sources given. 2.) I was looking for information on the Sultana specifically, but the vast majority of the book is given over to individuals.
