Linda Breen Pierce is a writer, keynote speaker and workshop leader in the areas of voluntary simplicity and work/life balance. She is the author of Choosing Simplicity: Real People Finding Peace and Fulfillment in a Complex World (Gallagher Press). Choosing Simplicity recounts her three-year evaluation of more than 200 people -- from 40 states and eight countries -- who have experimented with simplifying their lives. She shares the inspiring stories of these people in her writing, speaking, and workshops. Pierce also developed and maintains The Simplicity Resource Guide.

Born in 1947, Pierce developed a passion for foreign travel as a young adult, and she considers a three month period spent living in a small rural village in Senegal as one of her life's peak experiences. She has a degree in African Studies from the University of California at Berkeley and a law degree from Hastings College of the Law.

In the last decade, she and her husband, Jim, have taken steps to simplify their lives. They moved from Los Angeles (where she practiced corporate law) to the Monterey Peninsula. They downsized their house by half without any feeling of deprivation. Pierce no longer practices law, and she and her husband live on considerably less income. Having simplified their lives, they enjoy life much more.

Writing and speaking on simplicity are Pierce's passions today. In addition to her speeches and workshops, she has written or been featured in more than two dozen magazine and newspaper articles, and she has been a guest on a similar number of radio and television programs.

Pierce provides keynote speeches and workshops on the subjects of simplicity and work/life balance for corporations, governmental agencies, universities, and other groups. Representative presentations include Océ Technologies (the Netherlands), The National Institutes of Health, and the University of Northern Iowa. Audience reactions illustrate the rapidly growing interest in simplicity and life balance, both in the United States and around the world.

Her speeches are 45 minutes to one hour in length plus additional time for questions, if desired. Simplicity is a broad topic, touching on many aspects of life. Depending on the audience, she can emphasize various themes or applications of simplicity, including the following:

The meaning of simplicity in our complex world.

The impact of excess materialism on the quality of our lives.

Getting control over how we spend our time and our money.

Balancing our work and personal lives. Learning to say "no."

How living simply in our personal lives enhances our focus at work.

Why and how to slow down the pace of life.

Managing information/stimulation overload.

How living simply leads to a greater sense of inner peace and compassion for others.

The beneficial impact of living more simply on the environment.

How social and public policies influence the opportunities for simplicity.

Pierce also offers a variety of workshops of varying lengths. The most common are half-day (3 hour), full day (5-6 hour), and weekend (10-12 hour) sessions. These workshops are fully interactive. Participants work on specific simplicity-related issues pertaining to their lives through written exercises, small group discussions, and whole group overviews.

Numerous examples of progressive, educated, middle class Americans who have endeavored to "simplify" their lives. The examples are drawn from the author's "Pierce Simplicity Study." While spirituality is brought into the analysis, the author does not have a Quaker perspective.
