My interest in this book stemmed from a preview for the Ron Howard film, which should be out next year. This is the true story of the crew of a whaling boat from Nantucket, called the Essex, which was attacked by a huge sperm whale and sunk. This part is interesting enough, and inspired Herman Melville to write his epic "Moby Dick", but the travels and travails of the crew after the sinking are the fascinating portion of the story. Adrift in the Pacific for 3 months in 3 boats, the crew gradually had to resort to cannibalism to stay alive. Highly recommended.

Very enjoyable read about an true story that inspired the epic novel Moby Dick. Gave a really interesting perspective on the whalers of Nantucket and the time period. I couldn't put it down!

An excellent historical account of the American Revolution detailing the influences of public and private figures on Benedict Arnold and George Washington, their battles, personalities, failures and heroics.

Some interesting details about Washington’s journey. Particularly enjoyed the Banneker/Jefferson interaction, which was not part of the journey…. And a few Washington quotes that seemed they could have been written now. Philbrick’s irresponsible attitude towards his dog irritated me a bit. I love my dog and when I can, I let him run free, but , both for his own safety and the peace of mind of other people, who may not know collies are harmless( or at least my collie is) I don’t let him run free everywhere and anywhere. I know he was trying to add cute color to the book, but for me, that part fell flat… (lisätietoja)
