Rachel Whiteread is one of the most influential and fascinating sculptors of the last 20 years as her work looks at the negative space of other objects, such as the underside of a chair or a cast of the inside of a house (one of her more famous works.) This work is an important addition to the understanding of Whiteread, not only as a sculptor but as an artist as well. It was created to accompany the first museum survey of drawings by Whiteread,
tracing her career from the 1990's to present and gives insight into not only how she creates her work, but how she sees the world around her. This book allows us to see the drawings of Whiteread and see her inner thoughts she begins to conceive and think of a work, such as house. The book has two accompanying essays, the first of which places Whiteread and her work within the context of history and the second of which puts her drawings and plans into the context of her sculptures. It is also accompanied by a third essay, a visual essay by Whiteread, that features objects that inspire her and a few works that she created based upon the objects.

Even without the two written essays this work allows us to see the other half of a sculptor, the drawing side which often goes overlooked, and see how she creates and plans. Readers maybe particularly interested in Whiteread's use of whiteout on various types and colors of paper to create some of her drawings.
