Some interesting stories here, but a lot of tedious-ness also. The thrust of the book is that the current interstates follow roughly the same paths as federal highways, which followed the same paths as wagon trails, which followed the same paths as Native American paths. So Perrier really doesn't talk much about the interstates (and today) until the last chapter. Everything else is how long it took Mark Twain in 1880 or Frances Trollope in 1820 or George Washington in 1740. Each chapter cherry-picks a few interstate stories to focus on (thank goodness), but it's still rather disjointed.
