Lyhyt elämäkerta
Gilles Perrault was born in Paris and was a schoolboy during the Nazi Occupation. His father was a lawyer and his mother a former member of the French Parliament. He attended the Collège Stanislas de Paris and then the Institut d'études politiques ("Sciences Po"). He became a lawyer and practiced for five years. Following the success of his 1961 essay "Les parachutistes," inspired by his own military service in Algeria, he became a journalist. He wrote articles on contemporary topics, then began to investigate little-known aspects of World War II and also wrote politically-inspired thrillers. He occasionally uses pseudonyms, including Jacques Peyroles and Sidney Vania. Books include Le Secret du jour J (Secrets of D-Day, 1944), an international bestseller; L'Orchestre rouge (The Red Orchestra, 1967), which was even more successful; Le dossier 51 (1969), La Longue Traque (The Long Hunt, 1975), and Le Garçon aux yeux gris (The Boy with Grey Eyes, 2001). Several of his books have been adapted into films. Others have sparked political and social controversy, some leading to lawsuits. In 1980, he created the television series Julien Fontanes, magistrat. Since the 1990s, he has been particularly active in opposing the French National Front. He published his memoirs in three volumes between 1995 and 2004.

Reprint of a 1960s account of the famed Communist espionage ring that worked against the Nazi regime in both Germany and in Western Europe. It's admirably thorough in many parts, though one difficulty a reader has is keeping the entire cast of characters straight, as there's a bewildering roster that ends up changing names (and loyalties) all around. The book does tend to bog down toward the end, with a bit of rambling speculation about "Gestapo" Muller and his possible treachery. Also, the book was written before the (apparent?) discovery of Martin Bormann's remains. But still, you get a very good idea of professional tradecraft from the book, both in acting as spies, and in acting as spycatchers, most notably in how to run turned spies.… (lisätietoja)

To quote from the back of the bk: "Gilles Perrault's tense and dramatic documentary history depicts the rise and fall of the notorious Soviet spy ring the Germans called the Red Orchestra, which operated within the highest circles of the German General Staff from 1941 to 1944." It's mind-boggling to think about the courage that some people have during wartime. The 'Red Orchestra' threw parties for SS staff where they plied them w/ women who fucked them to glean their military secrets & got funding from them by selling black market goods. Interestingly, the technique of triangulation was supposedly developed by the nazis to find hidden radios of resistance groups.… (lisätietoja)
