Explores how holding on to hidden needs and desires also holds one back. Redemptive, accurate portrayal of mothers and sons, brothers; how things might be different beneath outward success and failure. So good. Reminds me of Pasan's story about his brother.

I Feel Sick. The Content Warnings are NOT Sufficient

CW: Transphobia (Misgendering, Outing, Violence), Sexual Assault (Referenced)

I SERIOUSLY ADVISE TRANS FOLX NOT TO READ/ LISTEN TO THIS. I REALLY WISH I HADN'T.

Neel Patel certainly has a way with words

***

I literally spent hours writing a full review of this, really getting into why this isn't Patel's story to tell, the ignorance and exploitation on display, and the very real violence we face, but somehow that has been lost. I'm genuinely inconsolable right now, having put far more thought and care into my review than Patel did to the serious issues he used as props in his story.

I don't think the story is malicious, buy it is ignorant, exploitative, and fetishising the trauma cis and trans women experience for drama and reveals in this story.

I am so disappointed and genuinely gutted to have wasted all this time.

Renu’s husband of over thirty years died almost a year ago and she’s decided to move from Illinois to London. Her son Akash comes back from Los Angeles to help her pack up the house. Akash has secrets and so does his mother. The book flashes back and forth between the present day and the past, making the characters well-developed and providing context for where they are now. This book brought out strong emotions in me – that’s usually a good sign. Akash is self-destructive but sympathetic at the same time.

My son gave me this book for Christmas – he knows me well! Recommended.
