I was a bit misled when I started reading this book: I thought it was about ‘temporalities’, different forms of time experience, a topic that particularly interests me in the context of my temporary reading program on the phenomenon of 'time'. But instead, this is a collection of essays on the historical method, the investigation of the past. The different articles in this book pretend to offer alternatives to the classical historical approach, which was developed into a professional method in the 19th century and which is mainly based on the interpretation of written sources, processed in a more or less narrative whole, preferably an academic monograph. The compilers claim that there are indeed other and equally valid methods to approach the past in an enriching way. And this book has the intention to give a sample of what this could be. The attempt is meritorious, but I am not really convinced by their argument. For starters: the composition of this volume is very diverse and sometimes contradictory (for example, the final contribution in which François Hartog once again presents his "presentism" theory has nothing to do with the previous contributions). But I’m also critical on the ambitious claims the editors make that alternative ways to experience the past also offer alternative views on the reality of that past.
