Amazon.com essential recording
With more than two hours of music, this is a hard-core Orb experience. However, fans and newcomers alike should not be intimidated, because Live 93 offers coherent, wonderfully recorded versions of some of the band's greatest moments. Indeed, many of the tracks included here are even better than their album versions ("Towers of Dub," for example, is absolutely devastating). While no one has ever accused the Orb of condensing their music, the tracks here feel even less constrained by the notion of time. Free to wander up, over, and around the music, the Orb let no thought go unexplored. Bass lines rumble like tectonic plates, melodies echo and float gravity-free, and all the while samples drift in and out of view, as if "Dr." Alex Patterson were scanning the universe with some jerrybuilt, deep-space radio. Tune in, turn on... --S. Duda

You'd think two discs/141 minutes of unadorned machine rhythms and strikingly original samples (Morricone, Rickie Lee Jones, TV documentaries, some chap named Victor Lewis-Smith singing, "Ripped to the Tits on Drink and Drugs") would be overkill, and you'd be right. But, taken in 30-minute doses, the Orb is both fascinating and functional in these excerpts from concert events in Tokyo, Copenhagen, and Glastonbury. --Jeff Bateman

you can?t go wrong with what is essentially a greatest hits, August 14, 2000

It's an indicator of just how hot the Orb were back in the early 90's that they were able to release a live double album, still unheard of to this day for electronic acts. But it was an obvious step nonetheless, from the ambient-house wizards who's songs already had a naturally loose, organic flow to them. This set culls the material from their first two records, with a few exclusives, and allows it to breathe and shape into a freeform beauty. The effect is enchanting, as if you were on the grass yourself and listening to the vast collection of natural and otherworldly sound recordings tied to the intoxicating, mellow beat.

We're not talking New Age goodvibes, but a dreamy sense of enjoyment. Snippets of humor underscore the notion of enjoying the moment over delivering a stadium-wide experience - as their frequent, cheeky nods to Pink Floyd show (undoubtedly a reviewer comparison at the time.) Snatches of documentaries, TV, televangelist sermons (the first three minutes of "Little Fluffy Clouds)", and other odd commentary further score the point. A song description would probably give the wrong impression- saying "Oobe" is a mixture of dissertation, roosters, flying jets, flutes, soundbites and a cascading beat implies a throw-it-in-the-blender approach lacking cohesion. Nor does it all work, at least as a chillout experience, unless three minutes of engine throttling is your thing (the start of the otherwise sublime "Star 6&7 8 9.") This pattern manifests throughout- minutes of recorded sample noodling before the next classic tune kicks in- enhancing the live experience despite the occasional missfire.

Still, you can't go wrong with what is essentially a greatest hits album. For the un-Orbed this is an excellent starting point, as are their first two records. Fans already owning the early works will still enjoy the mixed revisions- witness the distorted reverbathon done to "Towers of Dub," or the echo acoustics of "Blue Room." And you can't go wrong with a 20-min version of "A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain that rules from the Centre of the Ultraworld" closing out the set. Classic. Grade: A-

Slabs of dub, slices of surrealism, and disembodied "found" voices make their appearance on the latest offering by ambient dub commandos The Orb. Bicycles & Tricycles offers little in the Orb oeuvre that wasn't stated back on Orblivion and it's not the seismic paradigm shift of "Little Fluffy Clouds," but that's not to say there isn't plenty left in that fertile cumulus to explore. There's the Augustus Pablo melodica and dub bass on "Towers 23," and "Abstractions" lifts Frippertronics, something The Orb has been doing for over a decade. Except for a rap by MC Soom T on "Aftermath," the Orb has abandoned the trip-hop vocals of Cydonia. Instead, Bicycles & Tricycles returns to the original Orb concept which isn't about songs, but lysergic landscapes. Industrial grinds propel you through one moment, only to be untethered into infinite space the next, before being snagged into synchronicity by a dub groove. This album has been available as an import for a while, but the Orb's founder and master controller Alex Patterson has re-sequenced and re-mixed the disc into one of what are probably infinite permutations of flow. --John Diliberto

(REAL NAME)
Like most great groups whose best work is behind them, the Orb are now coasting on name recognition and fan loyalty. There is nothing truly moving or groundbreaking on this cd. Which is not to say it's bad. It's just not that good. Even the reunion with Jimmy Cauty ( who recorded with Alex Patterson in the Orb before they released their first album ) does not seem to inspire.
Dull and soul-less.

Orb - The O.O.B.E. Adventure (Windows compatible filenames) This Boot has two tracks & has the *very* early sound of the orb with lots of wacky samples and only a passing idea that a song might be in there somewhere. Quite disco-ish & only slightly chilled out. The chilled out sound is definitely forming here though. A must have for hardcore Orb fans but not representative of classic or later Orb.
