In Brene Brown's Daring Greatly, Brown draws on her research on shame to show how it makes our lives smaller and prevents us from living wholeheartedly. Newkirk rifts off of this notion by showing how our fear of failure and not living up to expectations is the true enemy of learning. Newkirk doesn't just describe the emotional underlife of school, but he offers practices and strategies to developing a more resilient approach to embarassment.

An interesting read with many useful examples in the call to slow down, appreciate, and engage with texts. On occasion, Newkirk attempts to link writing practices with reading approaches and struggles to get back to his main point.
