An introduction to early Modern English Tekijä: Terttu Nevalainen
I have a weakness for linguistics, so I was happy to stumble across this book. It's a fascinating look at the state of the English language in the early modern period, from 1500 to 1700. It traces changes and shifts in grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and usage. Some interesting tidbits include the fact that the regular plural form of "to be" in all persons used to be "be", as in "we be happy". Also interesting is that contemporary English is a mixture of the northern and southern dialects, with different bits of each winning out in different areas.

The only thing I thought was missing was the big question: Why? What were the processes that led to these shifts? But that may be a question that is unanswerable. Or at least I'll have to do more reading to find the answer.… (lisätietoja)
