One mistake. That's is all it took for Tara and David's life to go haywire. One mistake that quickly turned their life into a living hell. Now, they have to figure out how to get out of the mess.

The Accident is a fast-paced thriller that thrilled me from the beginning until the end. Tara's mistake of having one last fling with her ex quickly unravel her and David's life. At first was I unsure about how I felt about David and Tara, but as the story progressed and through flashbacks did we get to know them, how they met, etc. did I start to feel that I liked them more and more and wanted them somehow getting out of the mess. And, what a mess, this is like one of those movies when everything keeps getting worse, every decision just pulls David or Tara deeper into a web of duplicity and danger. I loved it! I loved the twist and turns and I loved that you never knew for sure what was going on.

The Accident is a fabulous book. I came to really like David and Tara, how they each had to figure out a way out of the mess that Tara's fling and David punch created. I love the whole chain reaction story, and there were several times during the books progressed when I thought "what now? What can go wrong now?"

The Accident is a great thriller (Although the cat scene towards the end of the book could I have lived without) and I recommend it warmly!

I want to thank the publisher for providing me with a free copy through NetGalley for an honest review!

Ordinarily, when I write a review, I first write a summary of the story. I am reluctant to do that, and just want to get my feelings about this book out. I was on the fence about this book the whole way through. What should have been a very quick read for me ended up being a long one, because it was rather dreadful. There were times that I felt like it had redeeming qualities, but as soon as I felt that, I was really thrown.

The murder at the outset just did not seem necessary, especially for the character involved, I found to be tragic. As an animal lover, I was also appalled at the insertion of animal abuse into the story. Was this to connect the characters? If so, I feel that the inclusion of it was done in very poor taste. Yes this book is about a family with secrets, deep dark secrets, and plots have to be developed. With all said, I honestly don’t know if I would read a book by this author again.

Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC to review.

“The most perfect lives can hide the darkest secrets…”

From the outside, Mary appears to have it all. Beauty. An extravagant home on a prestigious street. A silent yet supportive husband. Everything looks idyllic, even the rough spots. The fact that she’s taken on the difficult task of caring for her troubled nephew Finn can’t detract from her seemingly perfect life. She has nothing but support around her, including from neighbors who show understanding when Finn’s loud outbursts regularly disrupt their peace and quiet.

There’s Bairbre, who’s tolerant of Finn’s loudness that fills her garden daily.

There’s Brona, whose beauty Mary envies, but whose loyalty Mary doesn’t question.

And Zachery, the ultra-successful business man and Brona’s live-in boyfriend.

Indeed, everything in Mary’s life seems perfect, but things are rarely as they seem. Even the deepest of secrets can only remain hidden for so long. The insertion of Zachery’s therapist Conner into the neighborhood, as well as a piece of anonymous hate mail directed toward Finn, will prove the catalyst for exposing Mary and her family’s secrets to everyone.

“The Family at No. 13” by S.D. Monaghan opens in the present day with Connor kneeling beside a dead body on Mary’s driveway. In the next chapter, the story goes back a few days. Monaghan takes the time fully immerse you into Mary’s seemingly idyllic life and to develop the key characters until you feel like you know them. But all the while, something’s not quite right.

After all, someone was murdered.

But who?

And by whom?

You know there’s going to be a twist somewhere up ahead, but you can’t get to it fast enough as you walk, jog, and then start to run through the first parts of the book to get back to present day.
“The Family at No. 13” isn’t one of those intense, fast-paced thrillers that moves you along at breakneck speed. It doesn’t need to be in order to be good. Instead, it’s a riveting tale that keeps you in constant suspense. Even when it slows its roll in the middle, you’ll keep flipping through the pages until it picks up again. Because it will… and the ending makes it worth it.
