Interesting look at Nazi films, some of which are still (or at least were when this film was made) banned in Germany. Some are despicable propaganda, some are more subtle propaganda. When watching them, the production values and acting are often quite good--they look like American films of the same period, but their depiction of Jews, British, Russians, and so on is calculated not just to inspire the citizenry in their wartime battle, but to instill deep hatred that makes Nazi murder and genocide acceptable. Probably in a free society these films shouldn't be banned anywhere. It seems they are already available to those who want them. This documentary has a lot of smart talking heads (in German with subtitles), but it is the films themselves that I'll remember. Especially the happy, singing Stuka dive bomber pilots. Und dann ist da natürlich Senta Berger – eine der beliebtesten Schauspielerinnen des deutschsprachigen Raums und die Kraft, die alles zusammenhält in der Familie Verhoeven. Seit Mitte der 1960er Jahre ist sie mit Michael Verhoeven zusammen, seitdem haben die beiden mit ihrer Produktionsfirma einige erfolgreiche Filme auf die Leinwand gebracht: darunter Die weiße Rose und Das schreckliche Mädchen. Immer wieder betonen die Verhoevens, dass sie ein sehr inniges Familienleben führen – was wohl auch daran abzulesen ist, dass beide Söhne den Weg der Eltern eingeschlagen und dennoch Eigenständigkeit entwickelt haben.
