I've read great reviews and had high hopes, but this one just isn't doing it for me. The island setting is interesting, as is the protagonist's job as an aromachologist. However, while the voice and tensions are strong, this was lacking in stakes and motivation for me. Xia is so driven by winning this race and so bamboozled by Apollo's presence, but their history just doesn't seem to back that up. The way she was reacting, I thought they had a terrible breakup at least, but they're just childhood best friends that didn't work out and she's still hung up on it 7 years later. It didn't seem realistic to me. And I didn't get Apollo's motivations at all. It's a shame because this really is well-written and the setting is great, but I couldn't get past the fact that, for me, the intensity of the character's feelings and reactions didn't fit the context.

There's no backing away from the rebellion Alex started in Olympus. He cannot give in and let Olympians, otherworldlings, and humans suffer any longer, and now the siren he loves, Lula is at his side. The problem is, Zeus is after her and wants Alex's pledge of loyalty. But Alex won't bend. When Alex does the right thing, confessing he knew Lula long before meeting her, she runs? straight into the enemy, Moros', arms. The enemy who has a secret of his own.
A great weekend read that I could not set down with twists and turns that keep you on your toes.

I chose this book as an early reviewer's copy because I thought I should try a genre I normally do not read. In the future, I will simply stick with what I know. I had a very hard time getting into the book. There was a lot of backstory between the main characters that was revealed so slowly that by the time I learned it I was bored out of my mind. Xia, the main female character, was probably supposed to be funny and confident with her life. However, she turned into a love-sick puppy as soon as her love interest reappeared on Simona Island where the story was set. From there the story stumbled on and about two-thirds into the book, it turned from PG-13 to hot and steamy (Don't let the comic cover fool you.). This does not have to be bad necessarily, but it was unbelievable and did not fit in with the characters. I also think better editing might have helped to make this a better read.½

I liked this more than the first book in the series (even though the first one was very good). Xia and Apollo have a long history together so the tension is off the charts. It is such a slow burn but totally worth it. I really liked the storyline, both people have left the island at some point, but promises were made and now there is distance both emotionally and physically. Xia is a funny and confident person, but her clumsiness was too much at times. It was a little unbelievable. I also felt like there were a lot of unanswered questions. Why did it take Apollo three extra years? What do his tattoos mean (the X in the hexagon)? I almost actually wish there was a chapter or two from his point of view. It was nice to be back on the island and see characters both old and new. Overall this is a really great series with a fantastic setting and characters. This book can be read as a standalone. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.½

Caribbean Competitors: Xiamara is content with her life on Simona Island. She absolutely loves her job, where she is paid for her passion to do all things aromatherapy. She has great friends! And this year she is going to win the annual island Mossy Monster Meet and take home the title of Moss Boss. She has trained hard and she is ready. Until Apollo returns to the island. The boy she’s loved all her life. He’s been haunting her since he left seven years ago. And now she’s expected to partner with him in the competition, which is a real problem since she is struggling to speak/stay upright in his presence.
What a funny book! Xiamara was so hilarious, right from the jump. I loved spending time in her head. I keep thinking about her army crawling backward out of a room to avoid someone. She is bonkers and I love it. And her chemistry with Apollo is incredible. There is some mild spiciness present, but even without that you can just feel how into each other they are. Very hot. Very sweet.
The whole Mossy Meet is really funny. In one of the events, the contestants have to rescue lost tourists from the jungle. I know training montages might not be the most fun to read about, but I actually loved them in this book. More time to spend with Xia and Apollo, and more time to read about these silly challenges.
Xiamara is an aromachologist and I loved reading about all the scent mixes she makes and what the scents do. It was such a nice, immersive touch.
Caribbean Competitors is the second book in the Simona Island series and I really need to go back and read book one. I’m excited to learn more about the island and the community. Fingers crossed it is as hilarious as book two!
Thanks to LibraryThing and City Owl Press for the ARC!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Caribbean Competitors by Poppy Minnix is the second book of the Simona Island series. Although I have read the first book Holiday Hotel, this can be read as a standalone. I do recommend reading the first book though as a lot of the characters make a reappearance in this one. I can't get over how much this series and the people of Simona Island have won my heart over.

Xiamara Nivar reunites with her childhood best friend, Apollo Fischer. The character development and growth between these two is huge. From the first page until the last you are finding out more about them, their history, and the emotions they feel. Xia struggles with balancing the past, present and thoughts of the future all while trying to win the traditional island competition, The Moss Monster Meet. Simona Island throws a lot of curveballs her way that might just impact her chance of winning the coveted Moss Boss title.

The story is told from a single point of view, Xiamara. I often like alternating/dual point of view with both the FMC and MMC, however with Poppy's writing of Apollo into the book I didn't feel that I was missing out on the dual perspectives. Through Xia (and other island residents) we absorb everything about Apollo. Often I wanted to yell at her, "Oh come on girl!!! It's so obvious!" and it just kept me reading. It was easy to fall in love with Apollo and become Xia's best friend.

Caribbean Competitors includes love, desire, adventure, and so much more! I don't want to spoil it all. I would consider this story to fall in the lines of Second Chances, Friends to Lovers, and a kind of version of Forced Proximity.

I do wish that there was just a little more at the end of the story but I am always the reader who wants more and more! It seemed to end quickly. The epilogue gives us a brief look into the next book of the series as well as a little more closure of Xiamara and Apollo's story.

This is absolutely a 5 star read from me! Spice level 3/5.

A big thank you to Poppy and City Owl Press for providing me with a free copy of Caribbean Competitors in exchange for a fair and honest review. I can not wait until the third book comes out!

...Also, can we just make this Island real and move there?

This was a really fun read and I enjoyed the return to Simona Island. I definitely am looking forward to reading the other books in this series. I did feel like the spicy scenes was way too long and it took me forever to skip through it on my Kindle. Overall though, it was a fun story, and I enjoyed the twists throughout. I do wish I had more of Xia and Apollo's backstory as they kept referencing moments that I wasn't aware of. I'm not sure if that's because it's been so long since I read the first book or if it was intentionally vague.
4.5 stars½

I really enjoyed this book! I find that with some romance books, the plot is flimsy and uninteresting in lieu of supporting the ~tension,~ but here I felt like the plot kept me engaged more than usual. I wish the last 30% had stretched out a little more, because I would have liked to see more of their interactions while figuring out what their next move was. Overall, though, I thought this was a solid book.

I think I misclicked when I requested this book from the Early Reviewers, because this is not the type of thing I normally read at all. I will say that it was cute, the setting was somewhat unique for this genre and the writing wasn't the worst. Would have given it an additional star if the author hadn't used the phrase "patented boob press" so many times. I feel like the reader was left somewhat in the dark about the history of the relationship between the main characters until near the end of the book, which made it a little harder to get into the story. Overall it was pretty good and if cartoon cover romance novels are your thing, you will probably enjoy this one.

I loved the first book in the Simona Island series and was excited to get an ARC of book two! Xia and Apollo were best friends growing up and she always held that silent hope in her heart they would become something *more.* 💕💕 When that didn’t happen and Apollo left the island, she did her best to move on. I loved Xia’s character right away. She was fun, upbeat, and I loved the way the writing immediately immersed me in island life.

The big event in this book is the Moss Monster Meet, a race with different island specific tasks to perform at various stages of the race. It reminded me a little of The Amazing Race, which is one of my favorite shows, so I was totally on board! This year, there’s been a rule change and rather than running the race alone, everyone must choose a partner. I loved watching the chemistry as Xia and Apollo find their way back to each other… and there were even some surprises I wasn’t expecting! This is a delightful contemporary romance that I highly enjoyed. 5/5 stars.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary ARC copy of this book from the author for review purposes.

I couldn’t stop reading! Holiday Hotel had me smiling and laughing. Okay okay, I might have had a few tears but this is a story I will never forget. Reading the Holiday Hotel was an instant mood enhancer.

What an enjoyable romcom! This is a quick read with some good sexual tension and racy scenes. Although more time could have been spent adding to the depth of the characters, the lack of depth did not deter from my enjoyment.

A cute holiday romance. It definitely set the story up for a sequel (or more) but could be a stand-alone. I enjoyed the story and found it a very quick and easy read. There was some bedroom action but no long open door scenes like with other authors. Most of it referred to things that occurred in the past. Overall, I thought it was a sweet, cute story.

Hello island holiday's!!

Cozette has issues with her current beau, James. She tries some role play but it doesn't go as planned. She does the next best thing, she books a tropical vacation and leaves James and the cold NYC winter behind.

Fresh off the plane, she runs into beach hunk, Nico who happens to be her transportation to the hotel. They flirt, but he reaffirms there is a no fraternization policy in tact - but the sparks, the chemistry, you can feel it through the pages.

He helps play tour guide, spends a lot of time with her under the guise that he just works there, she doesn't know the real truth. Nico is the owner of the hotel, which she won't find out until the hurricane shows up. It pours in more than one way.

Cozette heads back to NY thinking maybe something can be rehashed with James, what was she thinking??? But then goes home to her parents in NC. Both Nico and Cozette finally come to their senses realizing they can be together, that they're not each other's ex's, and head back to the island. One catch, it's only for 4 months, unless they can't make her stay!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I read it in one sitting, not able to put it down. I really can't wait for more books in the series!!

I thought this book was well written for an easy read romance novel. It wasn't cheesy, and I really enjoyed the light feeling this book gave. It also made me want to run away to an island and fall in love, especially now during COVID times. More importantly however, the characters were written with a sense of romantic wit- which is great.
After reading this I am also wanting to read more books written by this author.

Thank you for writing this book.

Ah I just love Nico and Cozi’s story! It’s hard to not enjoy this book when the setting is a tropical island paradise! The characters and the setting were very enjoyable, especially the secondary characters. I love how Cozi was independent and stood up for herself and what she deserves. I thought the ending was very abrupt and would have loved the epilogue to have been of Cozi and Nico. But hopefully we will see more of them in passing in the next books. A hot and steamy read that kept my interest and also made me laugh and cry! I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.½

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. The author did a fantastic job of developing the main characters and building the relationships between Lula and Alex, and even Comus and Rath. The story line was very engaging and I didn’t want to put it down.

Where it fell a little short for me was in the development of the secondary and tertiary characters, like Lula’s siren sisters. So much of the story hinges on Lula’s relationship with them, but I really didn’t feel like I ever got to know them. That made it difficult for me to emotionally connect with Lula later in the story.

As a whole, though, I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who enjoys light fantasy novels.

Overall I really enjoyed My Song's Curse. While demons, gods, and sirens aren't new territory in the books I ready Minnix does a great job keeping the characters and mythology fresh and interesting. Lula is a character you can relate to without seemingly overly Mary Sue-esque, which could have easily happened. Alex and his friends are tons of fun to read about. I'll definitely be waiting for book two.

I think I've got a case of godlust now...

Overall this book was fabulous! Sirens, demigods, otherworldlings...I'm sold! Sign me up for the next book already. The two POVs flowed well with each other, alternating chapters. I enjoy when multiple POVs are used as it adds a nice depth to the story line, then I don't feel like I'm missing anything. The banter between both Alex and Lu is great, I really enjoyed the course of their relationship.

Now, the nitpicky stuff. The writing felt...clunky at times. I felt like I was tripping while trying to run over the words of this story because the anticipation made me want know what happened next. I just wish the writing was more...seamless. Now, I know I said I enjoyed the course of Alex and Lu's relationship and I did! BUT, how many times do they really need to go back and forth? No, I just can't! Oh wait, yes I can! No...I can't! It was really the worst part for me. Thankfully, they got over that!

With all that said, I am definitely looking forward to the next book :)

Thank you LibraryThing and City Owl Press for providing me an advanced e-copy to read and review honestly.
