Sarah Milroy

I love Maud Lewis’s artwork and am interested in her life.

I would love to read an art book that contained all of her paintings or at least a book with a lot more of her art and with more variety of her art.

I first learned about Maud Lewis from the movie Maudie. It was heartbreaking and inspiring and I fell in love with her folk art. For me she’s a 5 star worthy artist. I love her nature scenes in particular.

My library has only two books with her art. I’m not sure that they picked the best ones.

I liked this book but it didn’t have most of my favorite work of hers. Particularly given how short a book this is I thought that there was way, way too much repetition. Yes, she did paint many paintings that were similar to one another but she created a lot of artworks with subjects and even (sub) styles that don’t make it into this book. I would have liked this book better if more examples of her paintings had been included. Also, for my personal taste, there were too many paintings (percentage wise) related to fishing and to farmed animals and working animals. One aspect of the repetition that I liked was seeing similar scenes but in different seasons and also noticing the uniqueness of multiple painting that are close to identical.

I enjoyed looking at the art and there is a short but good section at the start that gives a good synopsis of her life and the many challenges that she faced.

I have gotten even more pleasure though of looking at images of her paintings doing online searches. Most of my favorites were not included in this book. I plan to read the other book my library has. It’s a picture book for children. I’d love to see a museum exhibit of her work. I hope to find more art books that feature her paintings. I might check out my library’s LINK+ program that allows patrons to borrow materials from sister libraries.

I’m glad that I had the opportunity to read this book. I enjoyed it but while I liked it I did not love it as much as I thought I would. 3-1/2 stars… (lisätietoja)
