Pietro Houdini, a mysterious figure who rescues the main character after the death of their parents, delivers these soliloquies in the guise of stories to teach life lessons. The Curse is a WWII story, but an unusual one taking place in Italy and dealing with atypical characters doing what they need to survive. This one will stick with me for a very long time. It's an extremely powerful and intense book.
In some ways, it's also depressing to realize how humans capacity for brutality never goes away or even seems to diminish over time.

Sigrid travels to America to search for her brother, at the request of their father. While the book deals with issues like death, race issues, a missing person, and more, it also has some very wry humor.
Such a horribly written book, I got through 9 pages and had to put it down.
