Abbas Milani is an Iranian-American scholar an author. He is the director of the Iranian Studies Program at Stanford University. He is also a research fellow and codirector of the Iran Democracy Project at the Hoover Institution. Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was the last Shah (king) of Iran. He ruled for 37 years, starting during the Second World War, and continued until the Islamic Revolution in 1979. In some ways, he was trying to modernize Iran (religious freedom, women’s rights), but he resisted democratizing the country.
I found much of it dry. There was a lot of politics, attempts to oust the Prime Minister and vice versa, foreign negotiations with the USA and Britain. There wasn’t as much biography as I was expecting; it was more political history than anything. It was long; technically, under 500 pages, but the font was very small, so it took longer to read than I’d hoped. There was a lot of information I didn’t know about Iran, so I did learn some things. I do feel like some photos would have been nice to be included in the book, but there were none.… (lisätietoja)

کتاب نگاهی به شاه کتابی تاریخی-توصیفی با قلمی بسیار جذاب و گیرا است که سعی شده بی طرفانه نوشته بشه. کتاب رو به توصیه عموم شروع به خوندن کردن کردم. عمده اطلاعات من تا قبل از این کتاب یا شامل نکات پراکنده از دایره المعارف ها بود یا شامل اطلاعاتی جهت دار از سوی رژیم حاضر و در طرف دیگه ناشی از "حس نوستالژی دوران طلایی شاه" افراد حاضر در سال های قبل از انقلاب.
این کتاب وقایع تاریخی بسیار خوبی رو از زمان به قدرت رسیدن رضا شاه تا انقلاب ۵۷ بیان می کنه. گرچه حجم صفحات کتاب بالاست، در اواخر کتاب با خودم می گفتم که کاش خیلی بیشتر از این ها نوشته می شد.
خوندن این کتاب رو نه تنها برای جزییات تاریخی زمان شاه که برای شناخت ریشه های تفکری حکومت کنونی خیلی توصیه می کنم.
"در ۲۶ خرداد ۱۳۵۸ روزنامه جمهوری اسلامی که بیان گر نظرات رهبران روحانی تازه ایران بود، در مقاله ای مفصل در دو بخش تحت عنوان "نیروگاه های هسته ای، خیانت آشکار به خلق ما" نه تنها منکر نیاز ایران به چنین نیروگاه هایی شد و به خطرات و مسائل ایمنی آن اشاره کرد، بلکه بحث را با این استدلال به پایان برد که ادامه کار بوشهر به صرف نیست. چند سال بعد آیت الله خمینی و رژیم اسلامی تغییر نظر دادند. این بار به احیای هر چه سریع تر اما اساسا مخفیانه برنامه اتمی ایران پرداختند."… (lisätietoja)
