- Louisa Anne Meredith, née Twamley, was born in Birmingham, England. She was educated mostly at home by her mother. In 1835, she published her first book, a volume called, Poems, which was reviewed favourably. It was followed by The Romance of Nature (1836).She also published several articles in newspapers in support of the Chartists. In 1839, she married her cousin Charles Meredith, back in Birmingham after emigrating to Australia in 1821 with his father and family. The couple sailed within two months for Australia. In 1840, they moved on to Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania). She wrote two books about her first 11 years in Australia, Notes and Sketches of New South Wales (1844) and My Home in Tasmania (1852), published in the USA as Nine Years in Australia.
In 1860, she published Some of My Bush Friends in Tasmania, with her own illustrations. Her wildflower drawings won awards at exhibitions in Australia and overseas, notably in the Melbourne Exhibition of 1866. Other works included Over the Straits (1861), Tasmanian Friends and Foes (1880), and Feathered, Furred and Finned (1880). She also wrote two novels, Phoebe's Mother (1869), and Nellie, or Seeking Goodly Pearls (1882).
Mrs. Meredith was an early member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and influenced her husband, after he became a member of Parliament, to legislate for preservation of native wildlife and scenery.
