This work has served as a valuable reference and textbook in electron microscopy courses. It begins with a chapter on optics, a second on the history of electron microscopes, and a third on the types of EMs. Ensuing chapters focus on properties of magnetic lenses, image formation, vacuum systems, the electronic systems, and installation. Subsequent sections deal with operational procedures, photography, and maintenance, as well as specimen preparation, and the future of EM.

In early iterations of my course, I relied on this work as a reference and copied several of the diagrams for lectures. I found it too heavy and technical to assign more than a few excerpts for student reading.
