Book was great for high schoolers, not for middle schoolers! I'm guessing it received Sequoyah nomination as Intermediate because of reading level, but should have received for HS Level in my opinion. Great book to discuss bullying, diversity, socioeconomic levels. Really shows the mind set of an unhappy teenage girl.

I love this bittersweet story about best friends. Evelyn and Daniela try very hard to pretend that this is an ordinary day – but it is not, Evelyn is moving away. The beautiful illustrations capture their neighborhood in the Fall and apartments with bright, vivid colors and patterns. This book is a wonderful tribute to friendship – the words and pictures convey all of the fun, secrets, comfort, and giggles best friends can share.

The story has characters of color and features Spanish language – but the theme is friendship. It is nice to see a picture book with diversity that is not explicitly about race, but addresses other childhood themes. Highly recommend!

Part romance, part family drama, part snapshot of NYC in the summer of 1977.

Nora is about to turn 18 and is trying to find her place in the world where she's scared of things beyond her control like a killer on the loose in NYC but also scared of things close to home like her brother who is hanging with the wrong crowd and is becoming a physical threat to her and her mother.

This is a YA that I wouldn't have picked up if it didn't come in a Book Riot box but I'm really glad I read it.

A delightful realistic fiction book that has plenty of complicated real life situations without feeling bleak. Merci is a great character, unsure of herself in the world at an age most children are unsure, and yet confident, creative and a good friend.
