When the USS Maine sailed into Havana Harbor on the morning of January 25, 1898, the ship's captain, Charles D. Sigsbee, was relieved to telegraph his superiors in Washington that they "had quietly arrived, 11 a.m. today; no demonstrations so far." Captain Sigsbee was well aware that he had sailed into a dangerous situation.
I've always been interested in the use of technology in warfare, and the American Civil War is one of those wars where technology catches up to human inventiveness. Great advancements from a military, medical and scientific standpoint took place. This book gives a general understanding of these advancements and gives specific case studies. It is clear, to the point and easy to understand.
Being half English and half Australian, it also made me wonder whether or not World War I would have been slightly different, had the British originally looked to Civil War technologies and methodologies of what worked and what did not work when waging war in the early 20th century.… (lisätietoja)
