You might guess from the subtitle that this is a humourous look at the history of medicine. The authors are a family doctor, and her husband, a layperson. The book appears to be based on a podcast (I have no clue about this podcast). Some of the topics they look at include: opium, charcoal, mercury, radium, arsenic, honey, chocolate, and vinegar. Also, weight loss, the Black Plague, erectile dysfunction, spontaneous combustion, phrenology, lobotomy, poop, the dancing plague, homeopathy, bloodletting, polio, and more.

This was funny! I’ve read a number of medical history books that look at many of these things, so some of the stories are repeats, but it’s still nice to get the reminders, since often with books like this that include so many different topics, it’s easy to forget. There were some fantastic illustrations, and little side-notes of the authors dialogue between themselves about the various topics. Even though some of the topics can be pretty disgusting (though it didn’t bother me), this is a good way to read about it with the humour mixed in.

I haven't listened to the podcast, but I have heard Justin McElroy before through The Adventure Zone. A fun, light (albeit does dive into gross, not-safe-for-dinner topics), bantery book about the weird beliefs and cures people have attempted in centuries of medical history. I noticed occasional typos in my library's copy but overall it was an okay read.

I listened to the audio book, and it felt like a stilted episode. Part of that obviously is because the reading of the book is scripted, but I think the material suffers from being too broad, whilst at the same time, very repetitive on some facts.

Nothing really new here if you are a fan of the show, but it'd be a good means to get someone interested who doesn't know much about medical history.

A likeable enough text, sure, but it really just didn't land for me.

I very much enjoy the Sawbones podcast. Sydney and Justin did a fantastic job bringing over some of the earlier episode content into this book. A super interesting read when you have time to digest it vs a podcast. Justin's humor is also found in this book, and while I enjoy listening to him more, it is still fun to see his humor in these pages.
