Formerly a lady's companion, Jenny Holloway has had some money settled upon her, and she wants to indulge her desire for travel and independence. Her plan is to go to India and find out what really happened to the Sixth Earl of Castleton. Her solicitor and former friend (there was a quarrel) Tom Finchley is determined not to let her go alone, but traveling together can draw people close -- or drive them apart.

I feel like this book is perhaps closer to the author's heart than some of her others. Jenny and Tom are frequently recurring figures in her other books. I enjoyed this book more than the first book in its series, though the characters' behavior at some points stretches historical credulity. Still, I'd recommend this series as well as the Belles of London to readers who enjoy historical romance that's not all ballrooms and carriage rides.… (lisätietoja)

Lady Helena is in danger -- so much so that she answers an advertisement for a wife. Captain Justin Thornhill never expected a young beauty to answer his advertisement, and doesn't think Helena will suit the position at all, but he can't deny the attraction between the two of them. Can he keep her safe from her secrets -- and his own?

After reading the Belles of London series, it was obvious that some of the secondary characters there had more to their stories, so I picked up the Parish Orphans of Devon series to learn more. These historical romances are popcorn reads, and I imagine I will continue to binge on them for a while.… (lisätietoja)

Lady Anne had a bitter quarrel with her childhood sweetheart, but perhaps time has healed some of their wounds. Can they find a way to give each other a second chance?

As enjoyable as other books in the series, though the second is still my favorite.

Julia Wychwood is cripplingly shy and detests social occasions. Perhaps that's why she's in her second London season with no hopes of an attachment save elderly lecher Lord Gresham who, unfortunately, has her parents' approval. The grim, scarred Captain Blunt, Hero of the Crimea, seems an unlikely match for Julia, but as she gets to know him, she finds that they share an appreciation for novels and horses, and his descriptions of his run-down property in Yorkshire sound heavenly to her. When she is in need of rescue, he spirits her away and marries her, under the condition that she not pry into his secrets or his past. At his remote estate, she finds pleasure in the company of Captain Blunt and his three wards, but difficulty in accessing her inheritance, and curiosity about his secrets. Will she ever be able to settle fully into her new life?

I liked this volume even better than the first in the series. The author's note refers to some of her inspirations, including The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery, as well as fairly tales such as "Bluebeard" and "Beauty and the Beast," all favorites of mine as well. This is a very romantic tale, with hints of the Gothic, and I thrilled to it just as Julia might to one of her favorite novels. My recommendation for this series is all the stronger for having read this volume.
