This book is one of many written for young readers looking for adventure and fascinated with the war which raged on two fronts at that time. The inside of the dust jacket of this book, written during the thick of WWII, says the this story "covers the exploits of the men of the Army Air force on the faraway Pacific and Mediterranean outposts and rings so true that one almost expects to read of them in tomorrow's newspaper. On a lonely Pacific island, Captain Hugh Steel has not only the Japs to fight, but his new Commanding Office as well. Major Dexter has gained his experience fighting and feels that he knows all there is to know. In spite of old planes and lack of men he stubbornly continues and loses more men and planes. Then when Captain Steel leading the Flamingo Squadron which, thought outnumbered, stops a strong Japanese air armada, Major Dexter is finally able to admit that Steel's way of fighting is better than his. Later Captain Steel becomes Major Steel and is transferred to a Mediterranean base. Here he hand-picks a group of fliers to bomb the Brenner Pass. Navigator, Peter Corvin, becomes suspicious when many of his comrades in the chosen squadron meet mysterious deaths, then he uncovers and thwarts Nazi plans to bomb Malta with block busting American Bombs meant for the Brenner Pass. Readers will imagine themselves doing the same heroic deeds Major Steel's men perform and will follow their vivid and breathe taking exploits avidly."… (lisätietoja)
