Melody Martin

Thank goodness I never had to teach high school. Martin seems to thrive on it, though, and her anecdotes are interesting. She doesn't seem to have a particular agenda, except to try to make the world more aware of what might be going on in teens' lives. In other words, it read almost like a journal of observation of primates, or an anthropological study. She loves and respects kids, but to survive she has to keep a certain 'distance' and therefore we don't get a chance to fully know the kids, either. Or to fully know her.

By now this is somewhat historical - San Diego has certainly changed since the early 1980s. I hope some things have gotten better. I also hope she's still teaching. But in any case, iff you are interested in the topic, I do recommend this book (if you can get it at the library or cheaply).
