While this book isn't likely to appeal to all romance readers, for those interested in the history of the genre and the ways in which money and marketing shape have shaped True Love and Happily Ever After, this book offers intelligent and well-researched insights.

It's fascinating to pair this book with Janice Radway's classic study (published in 1984) of how readers make meaning of romance novels.

Great book. I knew a bit about the publishing industry in general and had read about the substantial growth in the romance industry, but really didn't know much specific information. This book provides all the history and data anyone could ever wish access to. The fast paced growth of romance and all of it's subcategories has saved the publishing industry in general, not that it's given much credit or appreciation. This book is full of data, history and additional information that explain the formation and growth of romance publishing. I found it interesting, fast paced and east to understand. Highly recommended!… (lisätietoja)

Currently in the middle of this book and loving it so far, but I did come across an error. On page 76, author Abra Taylor is revealed to be the pen name of Margaret Brouse, but her real name is actually Barbara Brouse.

Publishing Romance by John Market certainly has crossover appeal whether you're interested in the history of the publishing industry and/or how the romance novel genre evolved. And being a fan certainly doesn't hurt either, but it's not a prerequisite.

What stands out for me is how romance novels are, by this point, a honed science with periodic market-based adjustments. To label them formulaic is merely identifying the chaff from the wheat—the great ones always stand out and feel like genre-busting publications even if they aren't.… (lisätietoja)
