There is no doubt that Manning was a fine writer with a special ability when it comes to examining human behaviour when it is subject to stressful situations.
I had read this book long ago and I didn't think much of it at the time, but at this late stage had forgotten the story.
Pretty well every character in this novel is at the mercy of forces well beyond their control. Their responses are always guarded, often bad tempered and governed by self interest.
The setting for this is the fabricated British island colony of Al-Bustan in the Indian Ocean. Visitors arrive via Reunion. The time is the nineteen seventies, the fag end of empire.
No one likes the main characters, Kristy and Hugh who arrive for the husband's appointment as some glorified publicity functionary with the colonial administration. He is gormless; Kristy is outspoken but without purpose except for "going on with her novel".
The British residents know of nothing else but their own privilege. However they are aware that their days are numbered. The native residents are surly, bristling with frustration and ready for any chance to become openly hostile. The married couple are often at odds and life for them is fraught.
Among the rest are developers anticipating tourism, depraved hippies, a layabout intellectual and Hobhouse, a rip shit and bust adventurer who has his own way of contributing to the overall tragedy in the eponymous rain forest.
It is a good novel with an entire cast of misfits who all really ought to be anywhere else other than where they are, washed up on a paradisical island
And Olivia Manning deserves all credit for her piquant prose.

Re-visited 2024 (this time in a radio adaptation, narrated by Joanna Lumley). Wonderful and sometimes satirical evocation of being a newly-married wife trailing her eng-lit teacher husband around Europe, trying to keep ahead of Nazi invasion.

Harriet is loyal to her husband, but increasingly exasperated by his neglect when it becomes apparent his time and loyalty belong seemingly to everyone else first. Guy is a good man, but myopic in every sense of the word.

Great characterisations & sense of being an ex-pat at that time in history. Loosely based on Olivier Manning’s own experiences in Europe during the war.… (lisätietoja)

Extraordinarily good and coherent account of chaotic events, pieced together from diaries, memoirs and Stanley’s doubtful lectures. Some traditional views on the character of Egyptians, Sudanese, Zanzibaris and Arabs could not be even quoted today. Stanley died of a stroke in 1904. Emin Pasha was less fortunate. In 1890 he was dealt with in a village 80 miles South of Stanley (Boyoma) Falls “Four men held him down upon the floor while Mamba (and Arab captain) slit his throat. His head was cut off, put in a box, and sent to Kibonge (the chief of the Manyuema slavers). His grave was never discovered. His men were killed and eaten by the Manyuema.”… (lisätietoja)
