While I enjoyed the story and the research that had gone into it, I did find it slow going. In the end I’m not sure I actually liked any of the characters, they were certainly complex but I struggled to see any redeeming features. What I found most interesting were the references to real Victorian shows and performers and the authors note at the end.
This was a first time author for me. This book did not impress me whatsoever. Victorian? Not much. Gothic? Yes, I suppose. Thriller? I would have to classify the thriller part as modern day thriller. I did not enjoy this book and the animal cruelty was a horrible addition to the book. Silas was a sickening character. This book was just not for me.
A novel about a strong, smart and spirited woman, an artist, an incel, the male gaze, the patriarchy, the freedom and liberation of art, passionate love and dangerous obsessions all set in the filthy and grim Victorian era London streets. Well written and difficult to endure in parts (if you're sensitive to animal cruelty, this may be hard-going at times), this was a character driven novel that delivered.

Somewhere between 2 and 2.5 stars (it was ok). This just really didn't grab me at all. I think it was the writing style I just didn't connect with so it may work for others. I think I may also not be captivated by circus books? But I didn't feel any connection to any of the characters, I found I didn't care what happened to any of them, and I honestly don't think I really even liked any of them. I actually picked up a different book and finished it in the middle of this one because I needed something that would keep my mind occupied and this book wasn't doing that for me. I think if this wasn't a NetGalley ARC I wouldn't have finished it which I almost never do (maybe I wouldn't have because the completionist in me wouldn't have allowed it).
To sum up, I just didn't connect with it but it seems plenty of other people have so take my review with a grain of salt.… (lisätietoja)
