Tietoja tekijästä

Clarice Lispector was born in the Ukraine and was taken to Brazil as a young child. She was a law student, editor, translator, and newswriter, who traveled widely, spending eight years in the United States. "Family Ties" (1960) is a collection of short stories revealing Lispector's existentialist näytä lisää view of life and demonstrating that even family ties and social relationships are temporary. Although tied to each other and to the outside world, the characters are finally totally alone and separate. Lispector received praise from American critics for "The Apple in the Dark" (1967), a novel about a guilt-ridden man's search for the ultimate knowledge (Eve's apple), which he believes will bring him hope. Lispector's books are being translated into various languages in Europe, especially in France, where the critic Helene Cixous is one of her great admirers and a promoter of her works. Being Clarice Lispector, Le Salon Littéraire du Peuple pour le Peuple (marraskuu 2009)

Kirja-arvosteluja

I’ve tried to write this review several times but none were satisfactory. I’ve decided there are too many interesting facets of Lispector’s story to include and do justice to in a short review; that it is better to keep it simple and instead urge people to read it for themselves. This is the first novel I’ve read by Clarice Lispector but I am eager to read many more; she has a powerful and unique voice.
.
The Hour of the Star is a tale of a girl called Macabéa who has every reason to be unhappy, but isn’t. At the hands of a cruel fate, she ploughs on, oblivious to how sad her life is, listening to the radio clock and drinking coca-cola. We are touched by both her innocence and ignorance; through her pitiful existence we contemplate our own humility and gratefulness for what we have, as well as how we treat others who have less than ourselves. For such a short book, it encapsulates a lot of life and the human condition. This is a book and a character that will leave an impression - highly recommended!…

Fico fascinado.

I struggled with this book. I tried hard to understand it. I just didn't.
