About the Author
Leo Lionni was born in Amsterdam on May 5, 1910. He attended the University of Zurich and also earned a doctorate in Economics from the University of Genoa in 1935. He taught himself to draw by visiting museums. After marrying Nora Maffi in 1931, Lionni moved to Milan, Italy, where he became known näytä lisää as a painter. In 1939 he moved to Philadelphia and began working in advertising design. Lionni held several positions in the artistic field including artistic director and design director. He also served as president of the American Institute of Graphic Arts. Around 1960 Lionni moved back to Italy. His first of over forty children's books was Little Blue and Little Yellow. Other titles include Inch by Inch, Frederick, Swimmy, and Alexander and the Wind-up Mouse, all of which won a Caldecott Honor. In addition, he received the American Institute of Graphic Arts Gold Medal in 1984. Lionni died on October 11, 1999 at his home in Tuscany, Italy at the age of 89. Winter is coming, and all the mice are gathering food . . . except for Frederick. But when the days grow short and the snow begins to fall, it's Frederick's stories that warm the hearts and spirits of his fellow field mice.
Awww mice are so cute!!!! The book did read like Narnia and less like a Children's book though.
- At first, while Alexander was friends with Willy, he felt lonely and upset at how much care the little girl gave Willy and not him. But, when the little girl was about to throw Willy away, he realized the little girl didn't care for him the same way he cared for Willy: as a friend.
- Alexander wanted what was best for Willy, not use Willy for what was best for himself.
- At first, while Alexander was friends with Willy, he felt lonely and upset at how much care the little girl gave Willy and not him. But, when the little girl was about to throw Willy away, he realized the little girl didn't care for him the same way he cared for Willy: as a friend.
- Alexander wanted what was best for Willy, not use Willy for what was best for himself.
Told entirely in dialogue through speech balloons, here is the clever fable of two talkative fleas, who hop unseen from a dog's back to a porcupine's quills to a crow's wings. Arguing all the way, they finally agree that each flea should live his life the way he sees fit. Full color.
Everyone loves Willy the wind-up mouse, while Alexander, the real mouse, is chased away with brooms and imperiled by mousetraps. Wouldn't it be wonderful to be loved and cuddled, thinks Alexander, and he wishes he could be a wind-up mouse, too. In this gentle fable about a real mouse and a mechanical one, Leo Lionni explores the magic of friendship.
