I'm going to start by saying "what the hell?". I never saw this coming! This story pulls you in and grips your heart and messes with your mind. The direction this story took blew me away. My imagination had this story going in so many directions that I was taken by stunned surprise by where it actually went. Great, great, great storytelling and for a first novel it's unbelievable!
The Marcus/Kate part of the story was 5 star. I couldn't put it down....I really felt the love between them! If only it could have lasted to the end. I felt NO love between Borden/Emma at all! It was nothing but lust....could have been one night stands over and over. Emma was some badass, switchblade carrying, tough girl one minute then having a shaking, meltdown, panic attack the next. UGH! Talk about whiplash.....I won't continue from here. The book needed a bit of editing polish but not bad writing.… (lisätietoja)
I was set to give it 4 but then it began to drag around 70%. It took forever for Nikolai to offer REAL help to Alina! It got frustrating. The end is very rushed but I did love the epilogue. I did a bit of skimming at the end. Writing was good and flowed well.
Unexpected
This book. I was not prepared. I came into this thinking it was going to a certain type of book based on the blurb. However, the blurb was like bait because it only loosely was somewhat like it but not in the typical sense of captive romance books are. Add in the title and it almost became a foregone conclusion. It wasn't and I was wrong.
What happens when the bad guy is good and the good guy is bad? If the person you are supposed to have actually is endearing and unexpected. Nixon is that guy. The conversations and interactions with Biden are not only engaging but were also swoon-worthy. He reminded me why it is important to not judge a book by it's cover. Both him and Vix were delightful. They fought as beautifully as the loved.
I'll definitely be looking for more from this author. There was a twist at the end and the ending ended abruptly which was weird considering this is a big book. I didn't want it to end as it was that well written. I hope this continues in other books as it truly was astounding and had great secondary characters.… (lisätietoja)
