Extremely short board book counting with penguins and rhymes -- nice illustrations, nice rhymes, definitely delivers the normal goods in its genre.

I really enjoyed this book for three reasons. The first reason I liked this book was because of the character development. There are many stories about princes and princesses, but the characters are always the same in all of them: the prince is strong and the princess needs saving. In this story the princes are all incapable of saving the town, and the princess is the one who ends up saving the day. I liked the role reversal because it made the story interesting and stand out.

The second reason I liked this book was because of the plot twists in the story. The whole town thinks that there is a huge scary dragon terrorizing the town. By the end of the story we find out that the dragon is not even scary at all. The dragon is actually a baby, which was frightened by all the people. There is another plot twist in the story in which the knight that saves the day isn’t a knight; it is the princess. These plot twists also make the story stand out from other usual princess stories.

The third reason I liked this book was because of its ability to push the readers to broaden their perspectives. Throughout the story, the king tells the princess to go inside and stay in her tower in order to stay save. The princess ends up being the only one who can save the day. This pushes the readers to think about typical female roles, and challenges their prior beliefs on women’s roles. Women can do anything they set their minds to, and do not always need ‘a prince’ to save the day.

The big idea of this story is that things are not always what they seem to be. Many of the town’s people think that the dragon is huge, and scary. In reality the dragon is a baby, and does not want to hurt people at all. The princess also appears to be a weak damsel in distress, but she ends up being the one to save the day.
