Sheriff Hank Randolph keeps the peace in Preston and his 15 year old son, Gary, runs the small ranch outside of town. The neighbouring ranch is owned by 13 year old Linda Vale under the guardianship of her uncle. All is going well until Sheriff Randolph discovers a robbery at the bank but all evidence including the shooting death of his deputy indicates he is the robber. With the Sheriff facing execution for the murder, Gary breaks his father out of jail and they disappear for 8 years.

The novel really takes off when an older Gary returns to Preston to find out who planned the robbery and the framing of his father. Linda Vail has grown into a beautiful young woman and is being pursued by a local rich and popular young man.
