Since this number was something of an afterthought acquired as part of a bundle of used Osprey booklets, in a series that tends to underwhelm me, I'm a little bit surprised with myself that I'm giving it four stars. What it boils down to is that Lardas actually has a knack for analysis, and makes the reality that both these ships were built around a few heavy pivot guns, and what that meant for their combat, the hook on which he hangs his narrative. One of the best of the recent entries in the Campaign series; the author does a very good job of explaining the contrasting structures of the British and French navies, and even has a mini-essay as to why the mission for the French (a major food transport task) was important. Definitely recommended.

Examination of the heavy vessels the Russian Navy used during the Russo-Japanese war, in the Pacific. Somewhat specialized, in terms of information, but there are some very fine illustrations, and the information is well laid-out.
