Wojciech Kuczok

Kuczok is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors. Sentences a la Saramago and recurring themes of love, death, child and partner abuse and toxic fathers. All of it firmly rooted in Polish contemporary reality.

A great romp through the life and traditions of the Polish mountain people "Górale" complete with tall tales and the mountain people dialect. Incisive, colorful, and very engaging.
If I were to compare Kuczok to a North American writer here, he is as good writing about the Tatra Mountains and their inhabitants as Annie Proulx is about Wyoming. I am also guessing that their efforts may be equally unlikely to be appreciated by the autochthons. Great and intelligent stuff, even if a bit biting!

Ein ausgesprochen schöner Roman, und das obwohl der Titel so langweilig klingt. Die letzte Seite schlägt man beglückt zu, taucht wieder auf und lächelt seinen Nachbarn selig an. Beeindruckend ist auch die Qualität der Übersetzung von Renate Schmidgall. Ich sage das, obwohl ich nicht Polnisch spreche: Wer als Übersetzer im Ergebnis eine so virtuose und dabei so leichtfließende Sprache erzielt, muss erstens ein Meisterwerk übersetzt und zweitens hervorragende Arbeit geleistet haben.

er lidt skuffet, havde forventet noget mere og bedre ovenpå de gode anmeldelser den fik. Men ellers en ok og meget barsk historie om en barndom præget af vold, svigt og forældre som er fastlåste.
