My new favorite book by this author!
Great suspense layered with plot twists, characters you can envision and care about, and a fast pace that made me look forward to picking this book up every night.
Told from a few POVs - Meredith, one of the main characters, her son, Leo, and next-door neighbor, Kate, and goes back and forth between the setup of the local women missing from eleven years earlier to present day (through Leo.) The story displays how easily one wrong move, one poor decision, one split second, can derail and spiral a person's life, along with everyone who loves them or relies on them.
I loved this quick read, and it moves to the top of my favorite book by Mary Kubica. Great book!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me a copy of this page-turner.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me a copy of this suspenseful read! Told from a few different POVs, this story may seem like the main plot is a whodunnit when Sadie and Will move to a new small town and their neighbor is murdered soon afterward.
But it's so much more than that, so many subplots that keep you guessing - who is "Mouse", a 6yo girl abused, and one of the POVs? What really happened after Sadie discovered Will's affair in Chicago, a town they've moved from to get away from their haunted past? Why is Sadie, a doctor, not treated with respect...by anyone? What really happened with Will's sister who supposedly committed suicide? What's up with her unstable daughter, Imogene, a girl who "comes with the house" when Sadie and Will move to his sister's old home?
And even when you figure out the answers to most of these questions, the ending is so good and unexpected, that you'll be on the edge of your seat as you read those last pages!

I've enjoyed every single book of Mary's, and this one is no exception. I think what really did it for me was remembering what it was like right after having a baby...the exhaustion, the foggy brain, the roller coaster emotions. Clara is dealing with all of that when her husband, Nick, is suddenly killed.

A husband she loved, trusted, and believed, only to uncover layer upon layer of lies and deceit. Or are they? Clara's mind is running overtime for answers as to what REALLY happened in her husband's death. And her POV takes the reader on a many-level-emotional search for the truth.

We also have Nick's POV of the events in months leading up to the accident. These characters, as in real life, have parts we admire about them, and parts that make you want to turn against them. Mary keeps the reader guessing right up until the end as to what happened, who was involved, and how Clara will move on with her life. Another good MK read!

Okay, you can get by reading the first half of this book alone. After that, I found my heart racing and wanting to look under the bed and make sure all my doors were locked!

The author does a great job of leading us down the path of two different stories, one told by Quinn, who has a missing roommate, and the other, Alex, a teenage boy with a bad home life. You know their lives are going to connect, you just can't figure out how it will happen.

And even if you DO figure it out, you won't be able to figure out how it all ends, because right down to the last few pages, it will keep surprising you.

Another great suspense story by Mary Kubica!
