Nowadays, physical, technical and tactical preparation is simply not enough. Mental preparation has become just as important a factor-or even the most important! In sports today, mere centimeters, fractions of seconds, single touches decide the final score. That is why only those who can maximize their capabilities in critical situations are able to achieve good results.

This book provides is a guide for these critical situations. It reviews the investigative results of other sciences and it applies and adapts them to fencing. Its theme and structure are clear and simple, and it is rich in examples which are easily understood, providing a useful support during preparations for athletes as well as for coaches.-Istvan Szlovensky, National Coach of Portugal (European Champions, 2000)

Aladar Kogler, PhD, is a seven-time Olympic fencing coach, a noted sports psychologist, and director of the Columbia University Sport Psychological Research Laboratory in New York City, where he serves as a sports psychologist for several varsity teams as well as a Coach of the Columbia/Barnard Men's and Women's Varsity Fencing teams.

A native of Hungary, he holds degrees from the Hungarian College of Higher Physical Education in Budapest and the Charles University in Prague.

Long before sports psychology became popuar inthe United States, Kogleer was using his innovative mental training techniques in little Czechoslovakia, not previously known as a fencing power. His fencers medaled at the World Championships in foil and epee and were finalists in Modern Pentathlon.

After coming to the United States in 1981, Kogler was named US National Coach. He has been Olympic and Pan-American team coach four times. He has produced numerous NCAA individual and team champions, as well as many USFA national senior champions, World Cup finalists, and Olympians in all weapons. He was named US Elite Coach of the Year in 1996.

A complete revision and substantial expansion of the first edition of Aladar Kogler's instant classic. This unique book looks at the key attributes that make elite fencers into world champions. Then it shows how you can develop these traits in yourself-- how you can strengthen yourself mentally to meet fencing's unique demands. Specific recommendations for your sense of distance, sense of tempo, bout preparation, bout psychology, and tactics. And there's much more, including a general program of mental preparation that extends to all aspects of life. Written especially for coaches but a must-read for all competitors.

This book has good psychological information for all sports participants, especially fencing. As someone who started fencing at age 60, and as someone who was never that great at sports, this book continues to help me deal with negative/self-defeating feelings, and helps me to keep a positive outlook. I am still reading this book, but have already put it to use dealing with my own self-imposed stress during fencing bouts. I feel my goals are now more realistic, and I enjoy the training more than ever. My only negative comment is that I found some of the information repeatative or more detailed that I needed 'to get the point'. I recommend this book for anyone who has stress/anxiety issues when dealing with sport competition situations, and who wants to maximize their learning ability.-Steve H.

The yoga exercises in this book not only provide a greater sense of well-being and deeper unity of body, mind and spirit, they also increase the body's ability to rejuvenate itself for overall fitness. The yoga asanas can be used for warm-up, cool-down, regeneration, compensation of muscle dysbalances, prevention of injuries, stimulation of internal organs, or for increasing your capacity for hard training. The reader can experience the benefits of yoga that come from knowing yourself and knowing that you have the ability to control your autonomic, unconscious functions as you raise your mental and physical performance. Yoga is one of the most effective means for accomplishing the daily practice of concentration. Yoga training plans are outlined for 27 different sports.
