Paul Koeck

De merkwaardige verrijzenis van Ángel Arcadio Picasso is a novella by the Belgian, Flemish author Paul Koeck. During the 1960s, Koeck became fascinated by Spain, and has spent a lot of time in Catalonia. Spanish culture has inspired him to write novels, short stories and plays set in Spain.

De merkwaardige verrijzenis van Ángel Arcadio Picasso is set in Spain of the Twentieth Century. The story features a succesful entrepreneur whose riches are founded upon the exploitation of a department store, begun under the regime of Generalissimo Franco. It breathes the atmosphere of Barcelona, with a possible wink at El Corte Ingles. The said family is not related to the famous painter, Pablo Picasso. The focus of the novella is on the life of the son of the family, and his career in the film business. However, his career and life in general are fueled by the family fortune more than talent or hard work. In fact, Ángel Arcadio Picasso rise in the world has very little to do with hard work, and rather more with corruption, the working of money, and beautiful women.… (lisätietoja)

Hendrik, de hoofdpersoon in zijn roman, is zich op zijn 33-ste pijnlijk bewust van zijn irritante deugdzaamheid. Iedereen profiteert van zijn goedheid en lacht hem vervolgens uit. Hij besluit daar wat aan te gaan doen en roept daarbij de hulp in van de Schelde, het vaste decor in het boek. Eerst koopt Hendrik een vervallen boerderij op een gevaarlijke buitendijkse plek en doopt die tot 'De nieuwe Ark'. Vervolgens verzamelt hij de zeven deugden: eerlijkheid, naastenliefde, moed, trouw, kuisheid, geduld en gerechtigheid. Om personen te vinden die elk een der deugden bezit, moet Hendrik telkens terug in de tijd. Hij brengt ze alle bijeen in zijn boerderij.
