Harold Kirker (1920–2017)

Part biography, part architectural history, this book goes beyond expectations and serves as a snapshot of Boston in the early 19th century. The central theme is the "counterrevolution" where the Sam Adams of the time with their ideas of social change in addition to the change of government are pushed aside by the "Essex Junto," newly wealthy North Shore elites whose goal is to create a New England aristocracy. It is in this framework that Bulfinch designs his buildings and reshapes the city.
