Thirteen-year-old orphan Shinji is traveling around the world on a boat with his aunt, picking up antiques and other curiosities for his aunt to later sell in her shop. But one statue that Shinji finds in a dusty shop immediately garners the attention of two nefarious-looking men who kidnap Shinji and bring him to an undisclosed location. He learns the statue is an idol from a magical place that has now cursed him. He barely manages to escape his captors and must team up with the secretive Society of Explorers and Adventurers to stay one step ahead of an evil corporation who wants the idol to satiate their greedy need for power, shake the curse of the idol, and return the statue to its rightful place – an ancient Aztec temple that no one knows exactly where it’s located.

This book is for those who like adventure stories; I could definitely see readers of Rick Riordan enjoying this book that also blends contemporary settings with ancient mythology. One thing I didn’t realize right away was that the Society of Explorers and Adventurers (SEA) is not something of the author’s imagination – it’s apparently an invention of Disney theme parks with an entire backstory tied into several of their attractions. The author does run with it and creates a more modern version of SEA, one that actually confronts issues of colonialism and vows to protect the environment and local rights to artifacts in their adventuring. I find it funny that a big villain of the story is a giant worldwide corporation interested in making more and more power for itself regardless of who gets hurt; I don’t know if this is the author being subversive or clueless. However, there is also a larger villain in the story who shows up in an eerie way for the prologue and disappears until towards the conclusion, by which time the readers may have forgotten about this menacing figure.

I liked Shinji as a character; his snark is not only very typical of a teenager but it makes for funny quips. His new friend Lucy is also interesting in her own way, although it was extremely easy to guess her supposedly mysterious background (at least for me as an adult). The SEA characters aren’t that super fleshed out at this point; Oliver Ocean has the most personality and I did find him compelling enough if a little cliched. As this book is the first in a series, it’s possible the other SEA members will get more character development in future installments. There is definitely diversity among the characters, both with ethnicity and physical (dis)abilities.

All in all, this is a relatively fun, relatively quick read. That being said, I also didn’t feel like it was ‘write home about’ worthy. There’s a twist at the end that some readers (especially young ones) might find quite unexpected but I predicted enough of it to not really find it that surprising.

I received Talon as a Goodreads giveaway, and I am extremely glad that I did!

This is an incredibly well-written book. One of those books that makes you lose track of time while reading, so that when you look up to take a break, three hours have passed.

This is a Young Adult novel about Ember Hill, a dragon in human form. She and her twin brother, Dante, have been brought up by an organization of dragons named Talon. Talon grooms young dragons for various roles within its organization after an intense training regimen and integration into the lives of humans. Talon teaches that humans would do anything to kill them, and would because of their numbers, but are infinitely inferior to dragons. To that extent, Talon also warns of a human organization called St. George that was formed for the sole purpose of finding and eradicating dragons. Talon and St. George fight a war behind the scenes, each trying to kill the other without other humans knowing about it.

The book begins with Ember and Dante arriving at their new home away from the Talon training center in the desert, where they had lived all their lives. They know what humans look like, how they act. They have read books, watched movies, had classes that provide information on what makes humans human. Their job is to pretend to be human, make friends, and integrate into society. Once they accomplish this, they will be trained for their roles in Talon.

Ember is not one to take orders well. Despite what she has been taught, she questions everything, much to the annoyance of her trainer, guardians, and her brother. Add in sexy rogue dragon named Riley and St. George soldier named Garrett, you have the right combination for combustion.

There are more positives than negatives to the book. The writing is engaging, and Ember, Garrett, Dante, and Riley are empathetic and engaging characters. I really enjoyed the fact that you know the basics of each character's background, but not the entire story. They slowly come out over the course of the book, and still leave enough questions to be answered in the upcoming books to make you want more.

I did have a couple of issues with Garrett and Ember. Garrett has been trained by St. George from a young age because dragons decimated his family. However, he KNOWS that they are watching Ember because they think she is the dragon they have been looking for. It is a little difficult to believe that Garrett would be chosen for this assignment considering that he has never done anything that normal humans do--never been to a movie, never actually spoken to the opposite sex, etc. And he is supposed to infiltrate the lives of humans to find the dragon. His cover story is that he works for his father in Chicago and that he is doing some work for him in California. His inexperience proves that he's never lived in a city, and Ember doesn't question this, even though she's been told from the very beginning of her life that St. George will do anything to get close enough to kill her.

I cannot wait for the next installment!

This is really giving me a rollercoaster feelings. Aku benar-benar suka dengan karakter-karakternya di sini, masing-masing meskipun individu terpisah tapi mereka bisa menjadi kekuatan satu sama lain.

Dan, I'm crying when Daisuke and Okame found their greater final. And crying again when Tatsumi can't make it. Like how could you make me like this? :( His character really grown on me. Metamorfosis dia itu indah menurutku sama kayak Yumeko. Kalau Tatsumi yang awalnya emotionless but really have a strong spirit to can feel emotion, tetap kuat, dan bisa menerima perasaan dan perubahan dia dengan baik. And that's good. Yumeko juga dari buku 1 sampai buku ke-3 itu character development-nya bagus, dari awal dia udah punya fondasi dan komitmen yang kuat, dan dia bisa menjaganya sampai akhir.

Ini benar-benar cerita yang bittersweet for me. Sebagai penganut happy ending, ending-nya cukuplah, but I want more.

I hate the love triangle, but I love books about dragons and forbidden love and rebelling against a fascist company/society/organization.
