Även om så knappast är fallet längre så var svensk brädspelskultur länge en tämligen enkelriktad historia: koncept kunde lånas in från andra länder, men ytterst sällan nådde någonting ut. Idag är det väl något annorlunda, när ett av de spel som av hobbyister räknas till världens absolut bästa faktiskt är svenskt, men före Terraforming Mars var troligen Drakborgen (Dungeonquest) det svenska spel som nått flest.

Detta framgår tydligt av denna bok: Alga var länge synonymt med svenska brädspel, och även klassiska spel som andra först lanserade har hamnat i deras katalog, som Bondespelet eller det omslagsprydande Den försvunna diamanten. Mycket av vad de producerat är klassiskt, men lite är vad som idag skulle ses som fullgod speldesign (det en gång panikframkallande Assassin skulle troligen vara opublicerbart än idag, men nu snarare på grund av att vissa spelmekaniska inslag som spelarutslagning och att slå-och-gå anses ge dåliga spelupplevelser och inte moraliska skäl).

För den som vill ha en historia över svenska spel, eller bara en nostalgisk tillbakablick, finns mycket att hämta: bilder, kortare förklaringar av mer kända spel, biografiska noteringar. Flera av Algas nuvarande eller tidigare anställda har ställt upp och berättat om historien (som egentligen bara sträcker sig in på nittiotalet, därefter är allt tämligen kortfattat). Ibland går det hastigt, men de mer kända spelen får ofta breda ut sig ordentligt. Materialet är tematiskt ordnat, vilket gör att man definitivt bör börja med den översiktliga företagshistoria som inleder boken även om man sedan tänker botanisera lite mer på fri hand.… (lisätietoja)

This book is a fascinating exploration of the subculture of metal music in Sweden. The authors, who obviously love the music, discuss thrash, speed, death, doom, black, Viking, and folk metal subgenres. The book describes the music itself as well as the Swedish metal scene, including record shops, labels, concerts, and merchandise (one band sells branded sex toys!). The reader will learn among other things about the relationships between metal and Satanism, Viking culture, gender (and the curious lack of sexuality in Swedish metal music), self harm, and white nationalism.

There is a surprising amount of humor here (given that severed animal parts and suicide are mentioned often). One band member, for example, has the nickname "Necrobutcher" while another is known as "Insulter of Jesus Christ!" (The exclamation point is not optional!) One band calls themselves Septic Broiler while another is known as Death Breath. Another band wrote a song called "Blinded by Light, Enlightened by Darkness." A record label is called Deathlike Silence Productions. (I imagine all these titles rendered in classic heavy metal Olde English font.) There are plenty of Spinal Tap moments here, in addition to the more serious topics.
