Tietoja tekijästä
Elfriede Jelinek was born on October 20, 1946 in Mürzzuschlag, Styria, Austria. She is an Austrian playwright and novelist. Jelinek was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2004. Jelinek started writing poetry at a young age. She made her literary debut with the collection Lisas Schatten näytä lisää (Lisa's Shadow) in 1967 and received her first literary prize in 1969. Female sexuality, its abuse, and the battle of the sexes in general are prominent topics in her work. Her works include: Wir sind Lockvögel, Baby! (We are Decoys, Baby!), Die Liebhaberinnen (Women as Lovers) and Die Klavierspielerin (The Piano Teacher). That last novel was the basis for the 2001 Austrian film of the same name, The Piano Teacher, directed by Michael Haneke and starring French actress Isabelle Huppert. When awarded the Nobel prize in 2004, Jelinek was criticized for not accepting the prize in person; instead, a video message was presented at the ceremony. Jelinek revealed that she suffers from agoraphobia and social phobia, so she was more comfortable accepting via video. Jelinek was also awarded many other prizes for her literature. These include: Georg Büchner Prize, 1998; Franz Kafka Prize, 2004; and the German Mülheimer Dramatikerpreis award three times, 2004, 2009 and 2011. (Bowker Author Biography) näytä vähemmän

You could of course read this without knowing Wagner’s ‘poems’ for the operas but without trying to be exclusionist I think so much of the book would then be lost. Although the initial spark for the conversation appears to come after the construction of Valhalla in Das Rheingold, both characters are aware of the entire action of Das Ring (indeed Jelinek introduces Wotan as ‘Wotan/the Wanderer’) and it permeates the entire text, its ideas and purpose.
The images I had in my mind when reading this were all from Patrice Chereau’s 1976 Bayreuth production which given his famously Marxist reading, with the gods as the epitome of exploitative industrialists feels apt.
The blurb tells us that the text was originally written as a libretto. I’d be intrigued to understand the differences and how this might work as a dramatic performance but I can’t help feeling that the way the book lays its images and concepts out is best suited to a solitary reader.
Gitta Honegger’s translation hits what appears to be an accurate tone from the start which I want to assume is Jelinek’s own.
This is a remarkable and profoundly original book.
PS I keep reading that Fitzcarraldo covers are blue for Fiction, white for Non Fiction but this can’t be right - this is most certainly not Non Fiction and I am also reading some Annie Ernaux (reviews to follow) and similarly confused.… (lisätietoja)
