Lyhyt elämäkerta
Dorothy B. Hughes was one of the most popular and successful mystery and detective writers from the 1940s through the 1950s. She had a great influence on the next generation of authors, especially women. She started her literary life as a poet, which helps explain the lyrical quality of her writing. Her work had more in common with British writers of the period such as Graham Greene and Eric Ambler than with Americans such as James M. Cain and Raymond Chandler. In Hughes’s novels, the male, hardboiled swagger is replaced by a more nuanced unease, even a sense of terror, with unseen forces, doomed heroes, and existentialism questioning of a world sinking into the barbarism of World War II. She was a master of atmosphere who vividly captured the moods and the dark side of the period. Her best known novel, In a Lonely Place (1947), was adapted into a now-classic 1950 film directed by Nicholas Ray.

I enjoyed this in that it kept me interested even though I pretty much knew what was going to happen. I would say that Hughes has a talent for suspense. This wasn't what I call a classic mystery, in that the reader was fairly sure of who the murderer was and who the victim was going to be. I would almost put her in a class with Daphne du Maurier, with less scary or ominous suspense and more keep-you-reading kind of suspense. I didn't love any of the characters, although they were interesting to read about and I was rooting for one or two of them.… (lisätietoja)

Not my favorite type of crime novel, but as was the case with the other Hughes novels I've read the writing was absolutely magnificent.

I'm not the biggest fan of killer POV works, but they broke the mold with this one. Languorous, dark, and smoky.

[a:Dorothy B. Hughes|80430|Dorothy B. Hughes|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1455297574p2/80430.jpg] can turn a phrase and keep the tension at high ebb. The Chicago swell's visit to a Santa Fe-like town in the middle of Fiesta as he hunts down "the rat" is a treat and a fine writing model.

“He didn't pay any attention to anything but the white-and-silver girl down in front. She belonged here; she was like something holy, like one of the altar candles, like an angel. He didn't pay any attention to the altar. There were priests up there chanting the litany; their white-and-gold benediction vestments draped over the red velvet chairs. There was a choir of seminarians singing. Singing the responses. Their faces were foreign like the town; brown Mexican faces, somber, and their voices, unaccompanied were like a heaven choir. He didn't care about that. He hadn't come here to pray; he'd come with a gun to keep his eye on a rat. He wasn't going to be sucked in by holiness.”… (lisätietoja)
