Trina is a loner, and Ethan is the school God. On the surface, it doesn’t seem as if they have much in common. Their hurt runs deep though, and it’s that pain that will bond them in ways they never imagined.

Deep and sweet romance. It’s YA, but the style and context of the story definitely give the impression more of an NA read. The romance flows easily, and I love how the bond between Trina and Etcetera (Trina’s nickname for Ethan) deepens as we get to know the characters. I was a lot like Trina in high school, just one of those people who blurs into the background with the lockers so I could definitely feel every ounce of her curiosity and disbelief about Ethan’s interest in her.

It's always interesting when the author narrates their book. This isn’t my first time listening to one of Miss Hucton’s books, and I always love her ability to bring life to her characters.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

A lovely little novelette about star-crossed lovers who meet ugly but overcome those circumstances, to a degree. Meltzer writes with great emotion and grace. Misplaced clauses may trip up some readers but most will forgive that in the flow of the bittersweet romance. I want the sequel soon!

If you loved the movie Labyrinth, this is your flavor of mind-candy. It reminded me a little of George MacDonald because it does have a Victorian flavor and there are elements of Grimm and Rosetti, of course. Him of the Green and Sir Gwydion were very well-done.

dnf at 36%, chapter 14

I wasn’t able to like Siren. At all. She is supposed to be an adult, but most of the time she seems like an “emo girl”. She goes on and on about how there is this curse on her, that her mother left, that everyone she ever loved leaves her… It was exhausting. If there would have been at least some more information about this curse or about her mother’s disappearance. But up until 36% there was none. Even though said topics were mentioned more than one.

Another thing was even more mentioned: Proposal and marriage. Most of what I have read was about this. Thinking back there wasn’t much happening. Carver disappears, then suddenly she is married to another (creepy) guy. A guy whose hobbies she doesn’t know. What?

I think this book will get more action sometime but I just wasn’t willing to read any more about the f***ing ring of Carver and how he was supposed to ask Siren to marry him.

Bonus points for the writing style and the cat.

If you are willing or like to read rather slow-paced novels this might be the one for you.

Disclaimer: I won Siren at Readaways and wrote an honest review of it.
